TRADITIONAL THERAPY FAQ
What is traditional therapy?
Traditional therapy is a collaborative treatment based on a relationship between an individual and a therapist. Grounded in dialogue, it provides a supportive environment that allows you to talk openly with someone who’s objective, neutral, and nonjudgmental. You and your therapist will work together to identify and change the thought and behavior patterns that are keeping you from feeling your best.

- Alcohol or substance abuse
- A decline in socioeconomic status
- Loneliness or social isolation
- Elder abuse, including long-term neglect

How long before any progress?
How long therapy takes depends on several factors: the type of problem or disorder, your characteristics and history, your goals, what’s going on in your life outside therapy, and how fast you are able to make progress.
Some people feel relief after only a single session. Some find benefit after a few sessions, while others can take months or years depending on their particular situation.
People with serious mental illness or other significant life changes may need ongoing therapy. Regular sessions can provide the support they need to maintain their day-to-day functioning.

Hypnosis, when performed by a trained professional, is a very safe and relaxing procedure.

Yes, you will remember everything that happens during a hypnosis session.

Hypnosis is a state of human consciousness involving focused attention and reduced peripheral awareness and an enhanced capacity to respond to suggestion.
Am I asleep when you hypnotize me?
Many people believe that you are asleep while you are hypnotized and that your “hidden mind” takes control of your behavior. This is not true. You are always in control even if you do things you don’t normally do while hypnotized such as cluck like a chicken or bark like a dog.
What problems does hypnosis work well for?
- Weight loss
- IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
- Nail biting, stuttering, smoking addiction
- Phobias (and you don’t need to be afraid of snakes or spiders)

- Migraines and tension headaches
- These are just a few examples.
What problems does hypnosis not work well for?
- Depression – If you are severely depressed, you will need medicine or counseling to treat this problem before hypnosis can work.
- Suicidal thoughts or actions – You will need to deal with these issues first before you are ready for hypnosis.
- Rarely helps reduce chronic pain, but it does help manage it better.
Can you help me with issues that hypnosis does not work well for?
Yes, in additional to being a licensed hypnotherapist, I am also a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). I have a Master Degree in Social Work from Boston College and have been practicing traditional therapy for over 10 years. I have worked with individuals ranging from 12 years old to 94 years old. Hypnosis is one of many different techniques that I use in my practice to help heal my clients. If hypnosis is not the right approach to help you, then we can develop other techniques to help you cope with your issues.
What is the difference between a stage hypnotist and therapist trained in hypnosis?
Staged shows are entertainment. Therapists use hypnosis as a therapeutic tool that can help you change behaviors and stop habits such as smoking or nail-biting.
